A Man of His Own
I’m coughing up blood
after a fight with my boss
in the search for truth
I’m hiding behind
a set of false teeth
that epitomise the falsity of my youth
I’m undertaking the readings
that we think are important
but it’s gonna take some time
The jury’s out on their use
their use is the governments
their use is not mine,
I’m done with school
with college
with university
with the things we’re told we need
I’m gonna read up on living off the land
and attack our presumption of a perfect life
with a bag of seeds
See I don’t believe in healthcare plans
dental insurance
and holidays to the Caribbean
once every year
I’ve cottoned on to the fact that
once you start having these things
you live the rest of your life in fear,
See I’ve seen your struggles
how you work all hours
just to pay off your bills
and these companies you force feed
they seem to love you right?
well wait until you get ill
‘cause when you’re stooped over
with your hands on your mouth
coughing up blood from your lungs
and you can’t shout to fight anymore
‘cause you’ve lost all sensation
from your tongue
do you think the government will step in
and say wait, don’t repossess his house
give this guy a chance
he’s paid his dues
hell no pal
your ass will be out on the streets
and you sure as hell had a lot to lose,
that’s when you’ll find me
living
not a slave to the state
with resources of my own
not just money
for them to take
so don’t call me a pariah
a messiah
or a martyr for living off the land
believe me
I’m only one thing
and that’s my own man.
